News Hack Arizona will take place on the University of Arizona campus on Feb. 18 -19. This year the training will focus on using Raspberry Pi computers and digital sensors to analyze, visualize and report using data you create from one of dozens of available sensors.

Here is the schedule for the event.

Saturday Feb. 18

8 – 9 a.m. — Sign-in and breakfast (networking)

9 – 10 a.m. — Introduction to sensors, finding data and Q&A with Lily Bui

  • Why use sensors 
  • Q&A
  • Finding data in the real world

10 a.m. – 10:30 — Story-building activity with Yoohyun, Lily and Jenny

10:30 a.m. – noon — Hands-on with Rob Wisner

  • Pi hardware 
  • Pi software
  • Intro to Python

Noon – 1 p.m. — Catered lunch (networking)

1 – 2:30 p.m. — Putting it all together with Rob Wisner

  • Blink an LED
  • Read data from a temperature sensor 
  • Read data from a motion sensor

2:30 – 4 p.m. — Breakout sessions

  • Spreadsheets and things – Yoohyun
  • Brainstorming sensor story ideas – Lily
  • Tech petting zoo — Mike and Jenny

4:00 – 4:30 p.m. — Regroup

5:00 – 7 p.m. — Drinks and networking, Barrio Brewing Co at 800 E. 16th St.

Sunday, Feb 19

9:00 – 9:30 a.m. — Team formation and breakfast

9 – 1 p.m. — Work with sensors to create and visualize your data (eat pizza)

1 -2 p.m.— Science fair style judging and awards
